The distance between these traditions will not appear so great, however, if we return to the problems that German idealism attempted to resolve: the problem of the possibility of empirical knowledge of the Transcendental Deduction and the general crisis of reason of the Aufklärung. Perhaps once the systems of Fichte, Schelling, and Hegel are explained as serious attempts to resolve these classic problems, they will not appear to be sheer speculation and system-building for its own sake? Perhaps they will seem to have, no matter how untenable, some philosophical point.

In a fin-desiècle mood, it is unclear quite what the future holds, if anything at all. e. that philosophy be cultivated as that moment of critical reflection where citizens are invited to question the doxai that govern their polis: what is justice? More crudely stated, philosophy should have a civilizing, educative, emancipatory effect.
